Brews & Booze: Happy Hour for the Everyday Yinzer
pizzeria. Not to mention they have a marvelous back patio where they host jazz nights in the summer. I’m not necessarily a jazz person, but you give me a glass of their wine and pizza, and I’ll skib-bidee-bop my way over there with the ghost of Duke Ellington any day. *Those of you who watch Big Mouth will get a much bigger kick out of that last sentence than those who do not.
The secret is out and our episode of House Hunters aired! And we all know you guys really want to know… where we ate/ drank! We had five days of filming, and in those five days we managed to hit up quite a few prime spots. I’m going to take you on a trip down our House Hunter’s memory lane.
Geoff and I had German beer to get the full experience, and it did not disappoint. We shot in April, and it really got me in the spirit for Oktoberfest… 5 months early. Either way, now is the perfect time so why not stop over there for a brat. There are also some breweries near by, peep our maps page Breweries.
Also let us know what you think about these options or if you have some others you think we should check out in the comments!
February 22nd. A day among days to many, but a day that stands out to Margarita and tequila lovers alike. IT’S NATIONAL MARGARTIA DAY PUTAS!!!! We are not the type to celebrate these crazy “national” holidays that frequent our calendars; however, this is one that we cannot turn down. IT’S FREAKIN MARGARITA DAY PEOPLE! If you are looking to go into work SUPER hungover on Friday after slurping down countless dranks, check out these National Margarita Day specials across the greater Pittsburgh area.
Downtown
Condado Tacos – On the corner of 10th and Liberty, this cozy joint will be serving up their house margaritas for $1 off. We will be the first to tell you… they are sneaky! Bartenders at Condado pour their delightful house made margarita juice from a tap!
If you are feeling adventurous, try the queso special of the day. The velvety goodness is sure to rock your taste buds. Disclaimer: Condado is NOT doing their normal 5 – 7 PM happy hour because of PA liquor laws. We have a lot to say about this, but momma always said don’t say bad things about others.
Las Velas – located above Diamond Market in Market Square, it is easy to overlook, or better words under look, is a wonderful gem of a Mexican restaurant. With some of the best Mexican food I’ve had in the downtown area, they will be serving up $5 house margaritas and $9 HUGE margaritas all day. Try the Tacos Al Pastor while slurping down a huge margarita with your loved one; a modern day, and albeit boozy, lady and the tramp. If you are loveless or selfish like us, just get your own huge margarita. This holiday only comes once a year, ya know.
Southside
Tres Rios – located on East Carson Street in the infamous Southside and “inspired by Andy Warhol and other Pittsburgh sensations,” they’ll be serving up a special margarita flight for $12.
North Hills
Franklin Inn – A staple among North Hillians located on Rochester Road, Franklin Inn will be serving up… well it’s a surprise. One thing they DO know is the Don Julio reps will be there giving out swag (cue the millennials are ruining the English language). We highly suggest the Nachos Grandes, and don’t skimp out on ANYTHING upon the mountain you are about to receive!
Strip District
Casa Reyna – an unassuming Mexican restaurant in the Strip District will be serving up Margaritas for $2 off during their normal happy hour, 4 – 7 PM. You cannot go wrong with the salsa trio, brought out with chips they make upstairs in the grocery store! Coined the Mexican Speakeasy by some in the area, you’ll be shocked at the size of the place upon descending two flights of stairs to a long bar and intimate, large, wood tables.
Shadyside
Steel Cactus – located right in the thick of things on Walnut Street, Steel Cactus will be serving up House Margaritas for $5 and lopping off $2 per Yinzerita. Oh, did we mention that this special is ALL DAY? Hell yeah.
There is absolutely no excuse to not go loco for National Margarita Day 2018. Feel free to comment with specials you deem worthy of noting!
For those of you whose Spanish vocabulary consists of the words “margarita,” “queso,” and “guac” (not even the full guacamole) then Condado is the place to get ALL of those things plus $1 tacos. And they’re all pretty good too. Happy Hour is from 5-7 Monday through Friday. This means 1/2 off single serve margaritas. You read that right. HALF OFF! You have a whole page of options, and one even comes with a Modelo (cleverly named Modelo-rita). Two words to make your heart sing: Bonus. Drink.
If you manage to find a spot at the bar (you probably won’t) then tacos are $1 during happy hour as well. But like I alluded to, the bar is packed. Well really the whole place is packed. So be aware of the fact you’ll be sitting rather close to your dining neighbor. Sometimes it’ll be the start of a new friendship. Other times it’ll be rolling your eyes at the douchey guy talking about how cool he is. If it’s the latter, that just means more margs to help drown him out.
My only complaint is most likely going to have all of you rolling your eyes. My complaint is this: the menu’s Spanish is grammatically incorrect. See I told you. But I admit it, I’m a Spanish grammar snob. Idk if you know this but I studied abroad in college. …I just eye rolled @ myself.
Anyways, just focus on the margaritas and go despacito because this is tequila we are talking about people. Try it out and tell us what you think in the comments below!

With every new brewery you try, there’s some sort of adventure. Whether it’s trying a new style of beer or the journey you take to get there. In our case, the adventure was a little bit of the journey, and a lot about the atmosphere. Friday night took over the mountain and through the woods to a garage. That’s right. Just someone’s garage in the middle on the woods in Donegal, PA. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t question whether or not I was being murdered. Spoiler alert: I wasn’t!
We pulled into the driveway and just walked right into said basement where we were welcomed by Frank Kegg, retired science teacher and part owner of Kegg Brewing Company (he and his wife Tracy started and run the brewery). With a name like that, you could say this retirement choice was inevitable. He began serving us the first sample of the six beers on tap while we huddled in his garage admir
ing his equipment and rock-and-roll decor. A self-proclaimed IPA guy, there was not one on tap. BUT he made up for it with his Pale Ale. In fact, there was not one beer that I wouldn’t drink. Even the stout and Porter, and I am most definitely an IPA gal.
We stayed much longer than expected, listening to Frank’s methodology and background. We left a little tipsy and with two growlers in hand, one of which I am enjoying right now. Sure, this wasn’t technically “happy hour” but we were there for an hour and we were definitely happy. It didn’t set us back to much either. At only $5/pint, $10 growler/refill, and FREE tastings, our wallets also thanked us.
If you’re ever in the area (perhaps heading up to Seven Springs) take the very special trip to Kegg Brewing Co. It’s only open Friday- Sunday, so it’ll have to be a weekend thing. Check out their website and Facebook page!
First of all, thanks to everyone who corrected me that it is actually Sienna MercaTo ( not Mercado). OH WAIT NO ONE DID. This is why we proofread, people. Anyway, my bad, please forgive my misspelling and in return take this amazing update to happy hour at Sienna MercaTo.
Not only is there now a BRAND NEW happy hour at Mezzo, the second floor restaurant, but there is also a bitchin’ $5 happy hour at Il Tetto (the rooftop bar that is hella cool). $5 select craft drafts. $5 highballs. $5 bar snacks. $5 house wines. $5 frozen cocktails. (If you didn’t catch that, it’s $5).
(I literally visited a high school’s website to remind myself how to source images. Four years of high school/ college done me good.)
Enjoy this new discovery and head on over to Sienna MercaTo (still not over my mistake) for happy hour on all three floors!

It snowed yesterday in Pittsburgh and even if you’re not excited for it, it’s exciting! Winter is quickly approaching BUT before you give me any holiday cheer, you gotta give Thanksgiving all the glory it deserves. Like the Wednesday night before, or more commonly known as the biggest drinking night of the year. And what better way to celebrate it than with happy hour after an early work dismissal? On a roof, no less! If you don’t want to give up on those summer rooftop ~vibes~ then Sienna Mercado/ Emporio’s retractable roof will let you have your cake and eat it too.*
